We have started our process for our rainbow portraits with all classes. Our littlest artists work most quickly, and some are ready to paint. Our oldest artists are currently sketching their final draft onto their watercolor papers. I haven't had a lot of time to take pictures yet, but I did get some process photos from our first grade groups. Check it out below!
Every year, I like to begin with a portrait project to help gauge student growth. The project is called rainbow portraits because they are displayed by class order, with each class focusing on one hue of the color spectrum. Kindergarten focuses on pink, 1st on red, 2nd on orange, and etcetera until we arrive at 8th grade who complete the rainbow with violet. First each class practices with pencils and makes a few sketches in their sketchbooks. Next, they use pencil to create a final draft on a piece of watercolor paper. After their drawing is complete they trace it and add designs with permanent marker. Finally, students use watercolor paint to fill the background with their class hue. For our letter of the day projects, kindergarten recently finished their "B is for Bird" project. The class read the book Hey Al and then designed masks to depict what they might look like if they turned into a bird like the character Al.
